How to Become a U.S. Citizen
The United States has a long history of welcoming immigrants from all parts of the world. As an immigrant, deciding to become a U.S. Citizen can be a very important milestone. To be able to enjoy many of the rights and privileges that are so fundamental to U.S. citizenship, individuals must demonstrate a commitment to the unifying principles that binds us as Americans.
To be eligible for U.S. Citizenship the applicant must:
- Be over 18 years old.
- Be a green card holder (lawful permanent resident).
- For at least the last five years, the applicant has resided in the United States.
- For at least the last 30 months, the applicant has physically been present in the United States.
- The applicant must be a person of good moral character.
- Have the ability to understand, have a conversation in, and be able to read from the English language.
- The applicant must show some knowledge and be able to answer simple questions about U.S history and government.
- Be willing and able to take the Oath of Allegiance.
Certain applicants are exempt from one or more of the general requirements for naturalization. Members of the military and spouses of U.S. citizens constitute the main categories of individuals who are exempt from some of the general requirements for naturalization. Since each case is individual, we suggest you contact our experienced Chicago citizenship attorney to learn more about which requirements fits your situation.
After filing the Application for Naturalization you will receive a notice in the mail scheduling you for an interview with a USCIS officer. The applicants that were found qualified for naturalization will now be scheduled for an oath ceremony. Applicants need to take the oath in order to become U.S. citizens.
